SERVICE DESIGN / TOURISM / AUGMENTED REALITY
Peach-Blossom Springs
An AR tourism and service design project that translates a classical imaginary landscape into an interactive cultural experience.

Research
From cultural setting to visitor journey
The project frames tourism as a guided discovery experience: research, cultural cues, and visitor needs are mapped before defining the AR interaction system.
According to legend, when Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) made his journey back to Flower-Fruit Mountain after wreaking havoc in the Heavenly Palace and getting drunk, he passed through Yangshan, mistakenly thinking it was his home. During this time, he dropped two peaches, which took root and grew into the origin of the water peach in this region. So, I took the monkey as the Intellectual Property image of Yangshan and created the game's story and interactions based on this concept.
The Space We Redesign
This game is created based on a real physical space, specifically, the space area at Yangshan Village's Peach Culture Innovation Center, which primarily features peach orchards. I collaborated with students specializing in environmental design. They conducted the site analysis and planning, while I conducted research on local features and user needs. Together, we integrated these aspects to design the interactive flow of the AR space.

Culture Symbol
Whenever Yangshan is mentioned, peach culture is inevitably part of the conversation. This culture encompasses more than just the agricultural heritage of succulent honey peaches; it also includes the folk culture of local peach wood carving and the distinctive cultural identity shaped by the region's volcanic landscape.

Insight

"A novel AR weekend, just immerse yourself in 'Peach-Blossom Spring'."
StoryBoard

Strategic Goal
- Make the distances between attractions more engaging with AR check-ins.
- Disperse foot traffic with scattered task locations, allowing visitors to explore and play games simultaneously, combining education with entertainment.
User Flow
Visual Design
Wuxi, situated downstream of the Silk Road's Grand Canal, is known for its many docks and has earned the title of "Jiangnan Water Town." I placed the story in Yangshan Wharf and used peaches as a medium, crafting a set of small animals responsible for transporting different varieties of peaches as the local IP characters.

Monkey
Energetic and lively, guarding the largest White Phoenix peach.

Cat
Shy and easily blushes, guarding the slightly reddish Lakeview Honeydew nectarine.

Fox
Graceful and elegant, guarding the beautiful White Flower nectarine.
The story of the monkey and Sun Wukong stealing celestial peaches corresponds, so chosen as the main IP character.

AR Interaction Design
iPad Device Design
AR interactive devices can be tiring for players to hold for extended periods. Therefore, I designed an iPad protective case specifically for AR use. This reduces the burden on players while meeting the requirements of our game.

Arduino Test
Used Arduino to simulate tool and detector interactions. The ultrasonic detector controls lights and a servo motor based on distance. A tilting sensor and servo switch tools, and dot matrix changes simulate different device states.

*Tested the device's feasibility with Arduino to refine the AR concept. The specific AR interactions for the game were implemented using Unity.
Final Design

0. Entrance
The monkey tells you that he has lost his peach and hopes you can help him find it.
